What is Pain and its type?

Pain is a very common sensation. It is an unpleasant feeling caused by the actual or potential damage to a tissue. The level of pain experienced for a given condition may not be same in any two individuals.

Some conditions can cause constant pain for a long period while other conditions cause mild pain for a short duration. Pain can be mild, moderate or severe. The common reasons for pain include:

  • Wear and tear of muscles
  • Sudden pull or stretching of muscles
  • Stress and fatigue

Types of pain:

Pain is classified into different types based on the following parameters:

  • Duration of pain experienced by an individual
  • Pathological cause of pain

Based on the duration:

Acute Pain: Acute pain has sudden onset and may last for less than 3 to 6 months. It is usually caused due to damage to the tissue such as bone, muscle or other organs.

Chronic Pain: Chronic pain is usually caused due to long-term illness such as osteoarthritis, tissue or nerve damage. The chronic pain lasts for more than 3 to 6 months.

Based on a pathological cause:

Neuropathic pain: It is caused due to damage to the nervous system due to diseases such as diabetic neuropathy or due to spinal cord injury.

Inflammatory pain: It is caused due to conditions which trigger the release of certain chemical substances or hormones in your body, which cause inflammation and pain.

Nociceptive pain: It is caused by damage to tissues such as skin, muscle, joints, bones or internal organs such as heart, liver, intestine etc.
